No DOSBox needed
Tyrian came out for MS-DOS in 1995, and its final version, Tyrian 2000, followed in 1999 (Wikipedia). To play those original files on a modern PC you usually need a DOS emulator such as DOSBox, with its own setup and its own key mappings. GOG offers the original Tyrian 2000 free of charge, packaged with DOSBox, if that is the version you want.
OpenTyrian2000 Enhanced Edition is a native 64-bit Windows program instead. It plays the Tyrian 2000 data on a new engine built with Godot 4 and Rust: five episodes, the shop, the secret levels and the original soundtrack, with modern display options and full gamepad support. It is free, and the freeware Tyrian 2000 data is already in the download, so there is no CD, no installer and no second program to configure.

System requirements
- 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. The game is built with Godot 4, whose system requirements list Windows 10 as the minimum for exported games. The v1.0-rc1 Windows build is tested before release by starting it and replaying a recorded game inside it.
- Graphics with OpenGL 3.3 support. Integrated graphics are enough.
- Disk space: about 700 MB to download (about 200 MB for the lite package), plus the same again to extract it.
- A keyboard, a mouse or a gamepad. Two gamepads give you two-player co-op.
Tyrian 2000 download for Windows 11 (free)
The download is free and already contains the Tyrian 2000 data, released as freeware in 2004 (Wikipedia): there is nothing else to buy or to find.
- Download
OpenTyrian2000-(704.0 MB, with the HD (AI) art), or the smallerEnhanced- v1.0- rc1- windows- x86_64. zip -lite.zipwithout it (197.3 MB). Every file is listed on the download page. - Right-click the file and choose Extract All. Extract the whole archive: the game needs every file in the folder.
- Open the extracted
OpenTyrian2000-Enhancedfolder and double-clickOpenTyrian2000-.Enhanced. exe - If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC” (SmartScreen), click More info → Run anyway. The archive's SHA-256 is listed in SHA256SUMS.txt so you can check it.
Extract the game somewhere you can write, such as your Documents folder: your saves, controls and mods then stay in its userdata folder. Updating, uninstalling and where each file goes are on the download page.
Full screen and picture size
The game starts in full screen, remembers your choice, and enlarges its 320×200 picture by whole-number steps, so pixels stay square. Alt+Enter switches between full screen and a window.
- Screen: Setup → Graphics → Display picks a window or the screen to use in full screen.
- Fit: Scaling Mode in the same menu offers Center, Integer, Fit 8:5, Fit 4:3, Fit 16:9 and Fill. Integer keeps every pixel the same size; Fill uses the whole screen.
- Look: outside a level, F3 switches between the original pixels, sharp pixel art and HD (AI) art, and F2 cycles the five CRT filters. F10 opens all display options at once. What each mode does is on Tyrian in HD.
Playing Tyrian with a gamepad
The default layout follows an Xbox-style controller (button names differ on other brands). Every menu works with it, and the first gamepad controls player 1, the second player 2.
| Command | Default button |
|---|---|
| Move | Left stick or d-pad |
| Fire | A or right trigger |
| Change fire (rear weapon mode) | B |
| Bullet time | Left trigger |
| Left / right sidekick | X / Y |
| Pause | Start or RB |
| In-game menu (volumes, game speed, quit) | Back (View) or LB |
Change any button in Setup → Key Bindings (or F9 outside a level). Setup → Joystick turns analog movement on or off and sets sensitivity and threshold. The keyboard layout is on the wiki's Controls page.
Common problems
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Windows protected your PC” (SmartScreen) | Click More info → Run anyway. The archive's SHA-256 is listed in SHA256SUMS.txt so you can check it. |
| The game says it cannot find its data | The data folder must sit next to OpenTyrian2000-. Extract the full archive again instead of running the game from inside the .zip. |
| No game can start, and Setup → Mods shows “GDExtension missing: mods unavailable” | A game file, tyrian_godot.dll, is missing next to the executable. Extract the full archive again. |
| HD (AI) is not offered | The upscaled folder is missing. The lite package does not include it: add the HD pack, or take the full package. |
| The controls are in a mess | Delete controls.cfg in the userdata folder (above) to go back to the default layout. |
| The second gamepad does not control player 2 | Player 2 uses the second gamepad detected: connect player 1's gamepad first. |
| The mouse does nothing in a menu | Move it first: after a key press, the mouse is ignored until it moves again. |
| “Modem/Network Game” is greyed out | Network play is not available in v1.0-rc1. Local two-player co-op works. |
