v1.0-rc1
Release candidateThe whole game plays from start to finish on a new engine written in Rust and Godot 4, every screen follows the original, and the HD art is optional. Get it on the download page.
Downloads and your files
- Lite downloads: about 190 MB, the whole game without the HD (AI) art. The full downloads include it, and a separate HD pack adds it to a lite download.
- Your files live next to the game, in a
userdatafolder: copy the game folder and your saves, settings, scores, replays and mods go with it. - On Linux, an optional launcher adds the game to the applications menu.
True to the original
- The mouse works in every menu, as in the original: shop, Setup, saves, data cubes and more. In levels it moves the ship at the original speed, also with Windows display scaling.
- Gamepad in menus as in the original (LB confirms like A, RB goes back like B). Analog movement is off on a new profile, as in the original.
- The original level shortcuts: F2 pause, F3 achievements, F4 statistics, F5 / F9 quick save and load, F6 DPS counter, F7 damage numbers, F8 sound, F10 replay recording, F11 gamma, F12 screenshot.
- Record your own replays with F10 and watch them from the Replays screen.
- Episode endings as in the original: story pages, name entry, high scores, credits, then the next episode. Secret level warps take you to the secret level.
- Fades, sounds, colours, the pause menu, the shop, the save and end-of-level screens, Timed Battle and two-player games were checked against the original, screen by screen. In December, the Christmas prompt appears, as in the original.
Display, modes and mods
- Full screen by default, remembered between sessions; Alt+Enter switches cleanly. The game starts without the engine's splash screen.
- Endless Arcade (Endless Mode in the menu) draws a fresh sequence of levels for every run; its leaderboard is the last page of High Scores.
- Side modes and mutators work in every mode, and every achievement can be unlocked.
- Modern explosions (shockwave, flash, streak and debris) are an option in Setup → Graphics → Explosion style. Their shockwave rings cool from white-yellow to orange to dark red, with a soft halo; small embers fly out of the explosions, fall slightly and cool down, instead of the red ring that ended the fire explosions; when a boss dies, 5 to 8 small explosions run over it for one second before the final burst.
- The Scanlines CRT filter looks like the original's.
- Mods can sell ships, weapons, shields and sidekicks in the shop. Five mod packs are included, all off by default (turn them on in Setup → Mods): the Alien Ship Pack and the Bio Ships Pack add 14 ships, the Alien Weapon Pack, the Bio Weapons Pack and the Elements Weapon Pack add 18 weapons with eleven power levels each. The level editor has undo and redo.
